Oral Hygiene Your Auburn, AL dentist is here to help even the most meticulous brusher brush up on their oral care regime.

Do you fancy yourself an oral hygiene expert? Do you think you know everything there is to know about brushing and flossing your teeth? Well, you might be surprised to find out that your Auburn, AL dentist has some handy tips that you may have never even heard of before:

Changing Your Toothbrush

How often do you replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head? If you don’t remember the last time you did it then chances are pretty good that you haven’t been keeping up with your toothbrush maintenance. A toothbrush should be replaced every three months, or when you start to notice the bristles are fraying. Once this occurs you aren’t going to get the most effective cleaning. However, there are a couple other scenarios in which you will want to replace your toothbrush right away:

After traveling: it might seem a little paranoid but germs can easily collect on your toothbrush while in your suitcase, a hotel bathroom or airport security. Play it safe and replace your toothbrush once you finally get home.

After an illness: If you’ve been sick then chances are pretty good that the bacteria and germs are still resting on your toothbrush; therefore, the minute you begin to feel better you better replace your toothbrush so you don’t risk getting sick again.

Someone else uses your toothbrush: This may be a rather unlikely scenario but even if your significant other or child borrows your toothbrush you need to throw out your toothbrush immediately. You should never share a brush! It doesn't matter how close you are to that person. If someone accidentally uses your brush then it’s time to toss it and start fresh!

Time Your Brushing

Do you know how long you should be brushing your teeth for? Every time you brush (which should be at least twice a day; three is optimal) you should be brushing for at least two minutes. While you might think you are brushing long enough, you might be surprised. Your Auburn, Al dentist can tell you that a lot of people don’t even brush for one full minute. The solution? Set a timer every time you get ready to brush.

If you don’t have a timer, consider purchasing an electronic toothbrush that offers the self-timer feature. That way you can focus on effectively cleaning your teeth while your toothbrush worries about timing your sessions.

Know When to Floss

Everyone, even children, should be flossing at least once a day. Flossing is the most effective way to remove debris from between teeth. One important change you should make it flossing before you brush. This way you can remove as much debris beforehand so your fluoridated toothpaste can easily get into those spaces between teeth for a more effective cleaning.

If you have any questions about your at-home oral care, don’t hesitate to call your Auburn, AL dentist, Dr. Jim Phillips, Jr. DMD with Phillips Family Dentistry.
